Thin line designs - Soap challenge November 2018

English version and video below  (italic)

I'm starting with an update on the blog post: I won the best technique award and was very happy about that! Thank you very much Amy for nominating me!

When I signed up for the September challenge, I signed up for the last three month of 2018. And there we go: this is my entry for the October challenge. The challenge was looking for thin line designs in two categories: for the regular category you have to use a regular block mold and pour thin lines from the long side of the mold. For the advanced category you have to fix a chopstick in the middle of a slab mold and pour by using squeeze bottles along the chopstick (or by hand). I substituted the chopstick by a plastic box (for a kids play) so I could pour my thin lines in waves - I figured out that it was even more time consuming than going straight from one side to the other. I was waving from one side to the other for more than 1 hour. The video I made took 1 hour and 20 minutes in total. However, I think the design was worth it.

Since I had only three squeeze bottles, I used the white base color (from not coloring the soap batter - I didn't use titanium dioxide since it's known for thickening up the soap), brown clay and in the third bottle I poured 5 different shades of nude, orange and brown from the lightest to the darkest and repeated this procedure another time and poured from this squeeze bottle. The next time I used this bottle I refilled it again with the 5 colors. I handled this bottle carefully because I wanted the colors to stay separate and not mix to much. In the video you can see how I managed the pouring and some more details. It shows pictures and a video sequence - the video in total would be repetitive and too long for my YouTube account.

  1. So very creative!! I love the wave design and how you added FIVE colors in one squeeze bottle! That was some very tedious soap pouring for sure, but what a masterpiece! The essential oils must have worked! It stayed fluid for so long!!
